The Illini Union Board (IUB) at the University of Illinois learned this afternoon that former Vice Presidential nominee Senator John Edwards has cancelled his speaking engagement at the University of Illinois that had been scheduled for October 14, 2008. Tickets had not yet been distributed for the event.

Here’s the official statement from Senator Edwards:

“I have decided to avoid any public engagements until after the election in November. Nothing is more important than electing Barack Obama and Joe Biden. I don't want my appearance at these events to be a distraction from the important issues of the election, or from the important purpose of these meetings.”
